  • Juniors

Mullion Juniors and how to be part of this growing section.

The Mullion junior section is one of the county’s top junior golf sections with in excess of 30 members ranging from 6 to 18 years old.

The juniors play every Saturday morning from 8:30 AM starting with the low handicappers playing competition golf through to those who are new to golf and who take part in what we call ‘Golf 90.’

‘Golf 90’ introduces young people to golf. It’s called ‘Golf 90’ because it takes 90 minutes from around 9:30 AM. For anyone wishing to try out golf we provide coaching and supervision and some equipment to get players started.

We monitor and encourage the development of our juniors so that they can follow a progressive path through from ‘Golf 90’ to 5 holes off the junior tees, then 9 holes, 12 holes and finally 18 holes initially off the junior tees and then when they reach a handicap of 28 they progress to the adult tees. When they reach 18 handicap they play off the championship tees.

Our top junior players represent Cornwall in different age groups and as a team have been highly successful for many years in County junior competitions.

Our aim is to make junior golf both an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We are fortunate to have a number of adult volunteers who provide supervision, organisation and coaching. if you would like to be part of the Mullion junior section please call the Secretary’s office. We look forward to seeing you.

  • Seniors
If you’re a male member of Mullion Golf Club, and you’re over sixty years of age, you are automatically a member of Mullion Seniors. Welcome! We aim to provide senior members with a range of opportunities to enjoy friendly competitive golf, through a range of individual and team competitions, and matches against other local clubs.

Thursday is seniors’ day at Mullion, when there will normally be either a competition or a home match against another local golf club. The seniors’ secretary maintains a calendar of events, covering competitions and home and away matches.

    SENIORS SECTION CLUB MATCHES

Anyone with a handicap index is welcome to play in our matches against local clubs. You just need to put your name forward in response to an email from the seniors’ secretary. The seniors’ captain selects the team for each match, using a set of criteria ensuring that everyone who wants to can play in these matches; if you are not selected for a given match, you will be named as a reserve, and this gives you priority for the next match.

The matches are played in a 4-ball betterball matchplay format, and are followed by a meal where, at home matches, we entertain the visiting team, and in away matches our hosts entertain us. Home or away, the meal cost is about £15 for a two course meal. Playing in an away match is a very cheap way of playing another local course; all you pay for is the meal, as the golf is free and the hosts always buy the drinks. Playing in a home match will give you priority for selection in the corresponding away match.

Our opponents range from The Point @ Polzeath in the north, to West Cornwall in the west and St Austell in the east. All our home matches are, of course, played in the south – at the southernmost British mainland golf course. Matches are played from late March through to October.

    SENIORS COMPETITIONS

Most of our competitions are open only to senior members of Mullion Golf Club, take place on a Thursday morning, and are played from the yellow tees. They range from Texas scrambles through betterball and greensome competitions to individual Stableford and medal competitions. Prizewinners are awarded a trophy to keep for a year, and cash prizes are credited to pro shop accounts.

Two open competitions for over-55s (Cyril Lane and Dennis Bray) are held each summer, and attract golfers from across the county and even a few from further afield. These provide a large proportion of the funding for the seniors’ section.

We also have an away weekend each summer, involving two rounds of golf and an overnight stay, this year’s event was held at the China Fleet Golf and Country Club, Saltash.

We offer you a cordial invitation to join in and support your Senior’s Section, everyone is welcome.
