May's Greenkeeping Report

Hi everybody and welcome to my first Greens Report.

I spent a wonderful morning with Gordon, Craig and James last Friday discussing all aspects of their craft and the long term plans that Gordon has for our course. I have asked the Captain to allow me a 5 minute talking slot at Tuesday's meeting so that I can pass on some insight into his work, watering policy and the future of our greens and rough in particular. Judging from the enthusiasm, expertise and in depth knowledge that I witnessed today, I believe we will see even more spectacular results as his long term plans come to fruition over the next 12 - 24 months.

The following is a summary of other aspects discussed with Gordon:

Winter rules and any restrictions on the 9th fairway are no longer in force.

The new compressor for the shoe cleaning fandango is presently down in Gordon's shed with plans afoot to have it installed and fully functional for Wednesday's Dave Gardner Memorial Trophy.

Problems with the pump transferring water up the 6th to the pond are now resolved. As a temporary measure we have been loaned a small pump which is now fitted and working fine. In the next two weeks PFS will supply and fit a larger, new, 660 gallons per hour, pump which will provide a long term solution.

The pond liner has a large hole in one side. Gordon has fashioned a temporary repair with an extra strip of liner weighted down with blocks. This has saved us approximately £100 in alternate repairs at this stage and will suffice until the pond is drained and a complete new liner fitted in September. Gordon already has the liner, again purchased at a very favourable price.

The practice net is now safe!! All exposed struts are suitably covered, the net itself has been moved forward and doubled up with the old net to prevent any balls escaping towards the 18th fairway.

After all the hard work preparing the course for the Ladies County Championships the greens staff will be occupied with ongoing fairway, tee and green cutting and dressing this month.

Long term plans include improvements to the path between the 9th green and toilet, the path leading down to the lower level of the 10th fairway and installing secondary drainage on the already much improved 15th hole later in the year.

Thanks are again due to Mandy for the additional weeding and planting work in the walls and around our very smart new patio area.
